I found this history of "In God We Trust" that we find on our money in a post on "La Crosse Talk" a forum for the public to voice their opinions. See history here. It is a history I have never read before. This history is why the Freedom From Religion bunch want to remove it from our coins. It also puts to rest any doubt that our forefathers were inspired by Christian principles.
